Chief engineer and designer of the Hallowed Halls recording studios, Justin Phelps began his career in 1996 at San Fransisco’s famed Coast Recorders. There he worked as house engineer and received considerable guidance from chief engineer/producer John Cuniberti and studio owner/gear guru Dan Alexander. After 4 years at Coast, he went independent and spent the next few years working out of some of the Bay Areas finest studios including The Plant, Prairie Sun, Studio 880, Tiny Telephone and Studio D among many others. In 2004 he acquired the lease for one of the more historic spaces in San Francisco, Hyde Street Studio C which he restored to it’s former glory and ran for the next 5 years as one of the busiest rooms in San Francisco. In the middle of all of that he miraculously found his match, Deanna Phelps. Shortly after the birth of their first daughter they relocated to Portland, Oregon. In 2010, through Super Digital owner and veteran engineer Rick McMillen and with the help of engineers Jordan Richter and Mike Blackburn, Justin founded Cloud City Sound. In the summer of 2014 he was asked to record and mix an album for a band called Bike Thief at Cloud City by Febian Perez and Greg Allen. Like most album productions it lead to a lasting relationship between he and the artists, and in this case, it also lead to the making of an incredible new studio. The Hallowed Halls was designed and built, with the assistance of an army of contractors, by Justin. The facility has become home to Studio A, a massive commercial studio featuring one of the best sounding large tracking rooms in the Pacific Northwest, and to Studio B, Justin’s personal studio and mix room.
